Millions of researchers, scholarly writers, students, and librarians use EndNote to search online bibliographic databases, organize their references, images and PDFs in any language, and create bibliographies and figure lists instantly. Instead of spending hours typing bibliographies, or using index cards to organize their references, they do it the easy way – by using EndNote!

Using Mac OS 10.8.2 and Endnote X4.0.2.
Works fine with Word 14.2.3 but the most recent update to 14.2.4 appears to cause problems with Endnote X4 (and apparently with X5, according to the EndnoteX support forums). Formatting citations with 14.2.4 will stall and then give an error message after about a minute. Downgrading to 14.2.3 seems to fix the problem.

How do you downgrade to 14.2.3 from 14.2.4? Is it necessary to uninstall word entirely and then reinstall only up to 14.2.3?

Can someone please test CiteWhileYouWrite in Lion with Word 2011?

+1 for someone to please test CiteWhileYouWrite with Word 2011! :)

Compatibility issues worry me for two important reasons:

(1) Most current Snow Leopard users of CiteWhileYouWrite for EndNote 4 and Word 2011 are already suffering from very noticeable reliability and performance issues after upgrading from Word 2008.

(2) Thomson Reuters has historically been slow, and generally unresponsive, with upgrades and updates for the Mac. Windows users come first, which is generally bad business considering an increasingly large academic market of Mac users.

Also Endnote is planning release version X5 soon. It says that this new version might one day support Lion but this also implies that they won't fix X4 if it has some problems..

Anyway I hope someone tests this, if not I will the day Lion is released.

I was wondering if anyone that has tested this could elaborate on CiteWhileYouWrite and other basic features.

Yes, anyone with Lion and Word 2011 using CiteWhileYouWrite?

CiteWhileYouWrite version X 4.0.2 works for me in Word 2011 (v.14.1.2) under Lion, although I'm using a shortcut to insert citations (rather than the tool bar that EndNote's supposed to add to the Word ribbon). I'd been unable to view the EndNote tool bar even before I installed Lion, however, so I've been using an assigned shortcut as a workaround.

In case anyone else has the same issue, shortcuts can be set by going (in Word 2011) to Tools->EndNote X4->Cite While You Write Preferences->Keyboard and then defining the shortcuts.

CiteWhileYouWrite works here too.
@Anthony
You can get the Toolbar via View > Toolbars? > EndnoteX4. You then get a floating toolbar.
Via View > Toolbars? > Customize Toolbars You can then drag and drop those symbols off the floating toolbar into your Standard Toolbar next to you undo/redo buttons.

I have a non English version of Word so the names of the menu could differ slightly.
Hope that helps though.

Does it Work with Endnote 3 and Word 2008?

For the ones where EndNote 4.02 works well with Office 2011 and Lion did you upgrade SnowLeopard or did you do a clean install.
I did a clean install of Lion and EndNote 4.02 and Office 2011 14.1.2. Although I see all the menu's and toolbars I cannot insert citations. EndNote gives the following error: "This command is not available because a document window is not active"
When opening a Word document the error: |"Word could not fire event" appears, the same error is displayed when I quit Word.

Not quite working for me. Toolbar and menu won't work. May have something to do with the quarantine attribute on all the files.

CWYW works fine using Endnote shortcuts, just no toolbar or menu for me with Word 2011.

Performed a fresh install of Lion on to a formatted SSD, followed by fresh installs of Office 2011 (14.0.2) and Endnote X4.0.2

CWYW works using keyboard shortcuts.

Managed to recover the EndnoteX4 toolbar and menu by adding the template. Steps:

1. Open Word, open Tools -> Templates and Add Ins
2. Click on Add …
3. Navigate to Applications\Endnote X4\Cite While You Write\n4. Select Endnote CWYW Commands.dot

All back to normal!

I am using End Note X4 CiteWhileYouWrite version 14.0.2 in Word 2011 (v.14.1.3) under Lion, however, I am finding that inserting citations is very, very slow. It takes about 65 seconds for each citation which is slowing down my work rate considerably.

Has anyone else had the same problem? Does anyone know how I can fix it?

Thanks very much.

Kirst, I'm using the same configuration as you and also notice a huge lag in updating citations. Did you resolve this?
