The installer says that you must have a 10.5 or later version of the operating system. If you open package contents and install your language package directly, it conflicts with the new notes.app from Apple.

If Notes already exists (prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion), then a simple work-around is to rename the Notes.app to "Lotus Notes.app" prior to upgrading. This prevents the name clash with the new Apple Notes app, and everything works fine. OS X Mountain Lion will download a JRE6 update on the first invocation of Lotus Notes (or any other Java based application).

The only supported version is 8.5.3 which is still in beta. You can get it to run SOMETIMES on Lion, but there is a line you need to add to the notes.ini (NotesPreference) file to make sure that it works.

Here is a note from the official beta forums:

Based on some preliminary testing, we've found that Notes will randomly hang (in mail operations or at startup) when being run on 10.7. It appears to be even more prevalent on the most recent build.

We're currently working on a fix for this that hasn't made it into a build (and won't be in CD5 which will be posted shortly). This has been lightly tested for 8.5.3, and not tested at all in 8.5.2 (but the ini variable should work for 8.5.2 as well).

If you encounter hangs while running with 10.7 you can set the following in your Notes Preferences (home/Library/Preferences/Notes Preferences)

POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1

IMPORTANT: We've found that the latest TextEdit in Lion automatically renames Notes Preferences, to Notes Preferences.txt.

Before updating your Notes Preferences, we recommend making a backup, edit the file, and then use the 'mv' command in Terminal to rename the file and remove the .txt extension:

mv Notes\ Preferences.txt Notes\ Preferences

DominoGuy, I have 8.5.2 and tried editing the Notes Pref file, it doesn't have the POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1 in it so I added it, but notes now immediately crashes rather than just hangs…. any other advice, this is the only thing not working on Lion for me!

Same problem here with 8.5.2. Is there no fix for this version? Strangely after installing Lion yesterday evening I have been still able to use Notes completely and without errors. Today morning after rebooting it stopped working. How is that possible?

moh, go to your desktop. Just click anywhere on it, under the Finder Menu (ensure that this is exactly what appears right next to the apple logo at the left hand upper corner) click on the "Go" menu and select "Go to Folder" and thyme the following:

/users/yourusername/Library/Preferences

yourusername- this is exactly the name that appears in the Home icon in your left panel on the finder

A quickfix on this error is to install the Basic version until 8.5.3 gets debugged. Worked for me.

On the support page I can only find version 8.5.2, but which I have already and that's the one that no longer works. : (

the POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1 fix worked for me (i put it at the start of the prefs file), but the "notes basic" install came up with an error that PPC code was not supported.

Had all the same symptoms, followed all of the advise, but Notes still kept crashing. I did a complete clean install of Lion using the Command-R during reboot to erase the existing hard drive and re-install (make sure you have a ethernet wire connection, WiFi may not work) Lion. Reinstalled Notes 8.5.2, along with all the latest patches. Made sure Java and Java essentials was installed. Made the POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1 entry in the NotesPreference file and Viola! Woks perfectly. Not one crash or hiccup all day long.

Yeahhh! The POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1 entry works here fine. No problems since the edit in the Lotus Noten Preferences.
Thanks for all tips. I use furthermore Notes 8.5.2.

8.5.2 works fine with POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1 when booting in 32 bits mode. 8.5.2 hangs or crashes in 64 bits mode.

I had 8.5.1 installed during the upgrade to Lion and it was working without issue. I am now testing 8.5.2 and it is having issues starting.

I did not find the Notes Preferences file in the path home/Library/Preferences. Is it a hidden file? Is there an alternative way of creating it?

Permanente Alan AbillaAlan AbillaAnonymous 09 Sep 2011 19:52

I added the parameter but it was not in the path: /users/yourusername/Library/Preferences

Instead, I right click on the notes application in the application folder. Did a show package content… under the path: Notes/Contents/Resources and edited to Notes Preference file to reflect the values:
[Notes]
Directory=$
SharedDataDirectory=/Applications/Notes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Data
InstallMode=1
InstallType=6
POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1

Notes worked after reboot:

Mac OX 10.7.1
Lotus Notes 8.5.2

First startup after update to Lion asks for Java update. After updating Java, make sure you reboot even though the update might not ask you to. Once I updated Java, reboot, and made POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1 change, Notes 8.5.3CD4 works fine.
