I read that you can open AppleWorks documents with Pages by right-clicking on the document and choosing "open with" and "pages". You then save it as a pages version.

I tried it, and it does work. That doesnt make up for the loss of Appleworks though :(

Too bad there are no apps like this anymore that are only around 15MB in size, take up minimal amounts of RAM and have the functionality of 6 apps :P

I have tons of AW files. I will always keep a version of Mac OS around that AW will run under.
iWord is no replacement for AW.

It would take me years to manually convert all those files to some other program.
All my database files can't even be ported to FileMaker.

There has never been an adequate replacement for Appleworks, especially the integration of the Database portion with Word processing for Mail Merge. There's nothing like it. I, too, will NOT upgrade to a system that will not run Appleworks.

I too will not upgrade if I can't use Appleworks for it's data base which can't be converted to Bento/Filemaker. Numerous files with this app over 20 years. I was using it when it was ClarisWorks before Apple bought them out.

I don't care for Works or Pages, both are too clumsy.
Apple should have taken Appleworks and updated it for newer features. I really like the menu bar much better than the small floating window in Word and Pages.
The app is fast, accurate and very easy to use.

I agree with ALL the comments posted. AW is one of the best written apps that have ever been produced. So good in fact that I STILL continue to use it. Works and Pages just do not cut it. I typically look forward to the newer apps and wanted to see what APPLE had in store once AW was retired. I think not continuing to develop this app is one of APPLES' recent mistakes. I doubt they ever read these posts, but in the slim chance that they do, I suggest that it is time to revisit this fine, simple app and bring it up to date for all of us.

I suspect that the Apple management didn't foresee that a lot of Mac users who invested their ingenuity and time in creating AW spreadsheets would not buy new Mac hardware if it couldn't handle the spreadsheets. I planned to set aside my MacBook and buy an iMac solely for its larger screen, but if it can't handle my spreadsheets, I'll just buy a $200 monitor and run it off the MacBook.

I've been on a Mac since the beginning. Appleworks still works fine on Snow Leopard. Even though I have Pages, Numbers and a couple of those pain in the neck Microsoft apps, Appleworks ease of use and functionality still has me using it daily Always felt it was a real shame Apple chose to stop upgrading it. and has now chosen to fully abandon it.

I have made the grave mistake of upgrading to OSX Lion and not checking first about the software. I have lost all my Apple Works Documents. There has been nothing equal to replace this software which was excellent. I have Society databases in that programme and have lost the lot. No option to transfer or anything. I am really angry. It has resulted in hours of work for a substitute that will not work the same.
