This requires Rosetta which is now a discontinued feature on OS X Lion. This app will NOT work under the current conditions and the likelihood of an update is slim.

You can play it on lion using this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-TORAQKGzc&feature=related

It uses a windows port instead of the actual mac version

If Apple didn’t get rid of Rosetta for no reason, they would’ve had a lot more customers…
Sadly, I’m stuck with it on my new computer…

When I bought my new mini MAC running OS X 10.7.4, I bought AOE III cause the box says it works with "MAC OS X v10.5.8 and higher". I don't blame Apple, I blame the developer for misrepresenting their product.

I contacted the developer. Here is what they said:

Unfortunately, because removing PowerPC was Apple's decision, we cannot update the title for OSX Lion without redoing the game from the ground up. We currently have no plans to update Age II

I would totally pay a high cost to get them to remake AOE 2 for Mac OSX.
Remake from the original cut scenes and graphics but make the game more stable and update the online game play to bring in high profits and online gaming.

If not i'm going to develop my own game that is based around similar concepts to AOE 2.

Can't live without it!

I've contacted the developers about updating this, they're the same people who develop the Mac version of AOE III. I highly doubt they'll be interested in updating it for OS X Lion though. I'll post an update when I get a reply.

A followup,

The developers replied informing me that they are considering it however its very unlikely as it would require a whole re-write of the software. So it seems that this game will unfortunately have to go in the cupboard for a long time unless you're all willing to downgrade back to SL.

Very disappointing! Timeless classic of a game. Mind, not the only one OS X Lion has killed off for new Macs. Also out goes Rise of Nations, Civilization 3, Starcraft, Diablo 2, to name a few. Thanks Apple!

well, u can use parallel desktops to install windows and play it on that… I am currently doing that and no issues about it getting slow. works fine for me now, I certainly do miss playing it on a mac though..

[ Sam]SamAnonymous 22 Sep 2011 20:20

I'd happily re-download/re-buy it from the Mac App Store/wherever if they made an Intel version, pretty please AOE developers :)

installed it on parallels on win7 can run ok but the colours look dodgy. Can anyone tell me how to move people to a selected point. I just migrated from PC to Mac and haven't figured out the finer point of point and click yet, no pun intended.

I would re-buy it too, hope they're gonna do it!!

[ Rob]RobAnonymous 09 Nov 2011 15:18

Since the developers have stated they are just going to sit on their hands instead of rewriting a likely profitable update to AOE2, then why not release the code so someone who wants to do the work can get to it?

[ kdw]kdwAnonymous 10 Nov 2011 20:31

i would buy too.

[ Bobby]BobbyAnonymous 16 Nov 2011 16:21

I would absolutely re-buy it too. It's my favorite game of any kind, ever. Some friends/family members (who would also re-buy it) and I still have LAN parties. Haha. We wait till Christmas, when everyone is home, and stay up till three or four in the morning having epic battles of all our 200 population. Fun times that will be ended unless they rewrite it. Sad.

[ Salmonator]SalmonatorAnonymous 09 Dec 2011 20:15

The 3rd game is not even the same! Have the game makers looked at Blizzard who made Starcraft. It is still on the shelf and sells just as well as the newer version because it has resell ability and replay ability. They should make a newer version. They would keep getting revenue.

Please update AOE II. Best game ever. Not happy that I can't play it on LION.
I would also gladly re-buy it if it worked. This game is a timeless classic that needs to be preserved.

you can find Rosetta on the disk that comes with your mac. I upgraded to Lion but needed Rosetta for Apple's jam packs. Open the CD files and you can install Rosetta from there. No problems.
