Hi folks, this thread is a bit old, but for those who come here looking for an answer to the Illustrator CS3 crash on print problem, I have a (somewhat) usable workaround. I've not found an answer that fixes the problem, but if you really need to print your Illustrator document, save it as a pdf first, then print it from Acrobat Reader. It's not really a fix, but it works.

I'm using Illustrator CS3 Japanese version (v13.0.3). It must be opened as Japanese mode so I'm using with "Language switcher" software.

I could open the CS3, make some objects, print them, export as jpg and eps.
Basically I don't have any problems. Rather there might be a problem to install the software which I didn't test.

Of course, the previous comment is about the compatibility with Mountain Lion.

What problems does Illustrator CS3 have?

Yes, please what are the issues. CS3 PS is a-ok so this is my only red light.

Illustrator CS3 seems to crash on trying to print a document. Other then that it seems to be okay up to now. I never print here at my home office anyway, but this could be a serious problem for some users.

If this is the only issue so far it looks very promising (for me at least:)

looks like my previous comment about the print dialogue box was removed so here's a screen grab to show that it does eventually come up.

Illustrator CS3 seems to open and function satisfactorily in Lion, but it asked me to download and install Java Runtime beforehand. It was a fairly painless download, so that wasn't much of a big deal.

A more annoying issue with Illustrator (and probably with the entire CS3 suite) is that the Adobe patches to update the software are completely broken. Anything that requires PowerPC architecture will not function in Lion. What this means is that you cannot upgrade your software to version 13.0.1 or 13.0.2. You're stuck with 13.0.0. If it isn't important to you to install the patch, then this shouldn't be a big problem, but there may be some niggling issues that the patch solved that Lion will not support.

I tried downloading and installing the patches directly from the Adobe site - same problem. It complained about a "bspatch" program.

If you can install the patches on Snow Leopard before upgrading to Lion, that is probably the safest bet. If you've done a clean install of Lion as I have, you're probably out of luck with the patches.

Jeff is right about the patches being broken for people who have done a clean install with Lion. I've been trying to get them to install for the last two days without any luck…

Be smarter than me and upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard after installing the 13.0.1 and 13.0.2 patches.

Does the crash on print bug have any relevance to the type of printer, or is this happening regardless of printer type? This is my lat remaining holdup for upgrading.

The comment Jeff mentions is something I've experience for almost 2 years on Snow Leopard. Adobe's buggy update software keeps asking to update Illustrator to 13.0.1 and always fails to install. It's annoying but dosen't seem to effect production. Am I the only one that had this problem previous to Lion?

After a few weeks using it on Lion, Illustrator CS3 is no longer opening any files - choosing to crash instead. Like Jeff, I did a clean install and am stuck on v 13.0.0.

This will be the straw that causes me to upgrade to CS5.

If you're thinking of upgrading to CS5 and ditching your copy of CS3 because you can't get the updates installed, hold that thought!

I've found an effective (albeit slightly troublesome) workaround to update Illustrator CS3 on Lion, even after you've taken the clean install path (installed Lion and then CS3).

Check out the answer by Sergio-PL on the following Apple Discussions thread:

I was able to successfully update Illustrator CS3 to 13.0.2 with this workaround!
