Hotspot Shield creates a virtual private network (VPN) between your laptop and the wireless router. This impenetrable tunnel prevents snoopers and hackers from viewing your email, instant messages, credit card information or anything else you send over a wireless network. Which means you remain anonymous and protect your privacy. Hotspot Shield security software is free to download, employs the latest VPN technology, and is easy to install and use. So go ahead – Get behind the Shield – try Hotspot Shield today!

Installed without issue in 10.7, I did have to set a manual DNS (to openDNS) in my network prefs to get it working

Same thing here with mountain lion. Even with the newest version it gets connected but then it doesn't open any web page. By the guy where it is working, did u do a clean installation or did u update? Did u change any connection settings in mountain lion?

Yes, same symptoms. Icon turns green but no connection. Their tech support says it's not compatible with Mountain Lion at this time, they're working on a compatible version, but no ETA. Click on Support Forums and search for Mountain Lion at: http://www.anchorfree.com/support.php

I've found a workaround that allows Hotspot Shield to work on Mountain Lion:

"…2) I went into Network Preferences/Advanced
3) Clicked on the DNS tab
4) Added two new OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 by pressing the '+' button

5) I clicked OK and then Apply
6) I connected to VPN and voila - everything works fine. Wifi works also while VPN is disconnected. "

Lion (10.7) Comments

HotSpot Shield currently requires Rosetta, as it's still a PowerPC application. (SIDENOTE: Really? The transition to Intel happened in 2006!)

Lion doesn't have the Rosetta PPC emulation layer in it anymore, so HotSpot Shield won't work.

Their website says it supports Lion, but I didn't check it. Someone should though, or else contacting them and letting them know about it is a good idea :)

update: just downloaded the new version from their website - works just fine, it's now a universal application.
