Inkscape also supports Creative Commons meta-data, node editing, layers, complex path operations, bitmap tracing, text-on-path, flowed text, direct XML editing, and more. It imports formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and others and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.

First you need to install X11 2.7.2: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.7.2
Since Mountain Lion no longer supports X11.
Then logout, than back in.
Then install inkscape 0.48.2

Updated to XQuartz 2.7.2_beta3 and mountain lion release 2.

When Inkscape starts and asks where X11 is, you need to choose XQuartz in the Applications/Utilities folder.

If you have difficulties, just open the download advised above 'xquartz' first by itself then open inkscape separately and it will run, usual 2 second delay. Works great

I can get InkScape to run but when I quit I get a full black screen. I have to pull up my dock and open a new app for the back screen to go away. Anyone have this problem?

Can someone give me step by step directions for Mountain Lion OS? I have downloaded XQuartz which is in my utilities folder. I have also downloaded Inkscape but cannot open it. Thank you for any help!

When I downloaded XQuartz and Inkscape to my Mac (Mountain Lion), I first installed XQuartz. Then I logged out. Then I logged back in again and attempted to start Inkscape. A window popped up asking me where X11 was. I selected 'Browse' at the bottom left corner of that pop-up window and navigated to Applications > Utilities > XQuartz. After that, I tried again to open Inkscape. It opened successfully and without incident after a short delay.
