gmailto is an open source and small program that handles mailto: links on Mac OS X by opening a Gmail compose window in the default browser. gmailto also supports Google Apps email accounts.

The author states that this project has been made obsolete by Gmail Dock, which he charges for on the Mac App Store. Mind you, the original free program works quite fine.
