Notes

After installing you can enable dictionaries via the (added) Spelling pane in System preferences; then you need to close and reopen Preference pane before the enables dictionaries can be selected as default language in the Language & Text preference (at least in my case)

cocoAspell indeed is not working. It installs ok but is dead. It does not display any suggestions.

Really works fine here on both Lion and (clean installed) Mountain Lion, but see my remark about needing to restart the System Preference app before I could select the newly enabled dictionaries…
