Mac users who have access to a Windows-based computer on a network, can use Remote Desktop Connection as an alternative to Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac.

Known problems:

Lion:

  • Slow copying to/from the RDC connection.
  • If you have it open on another space, it doesn't seem to properly "capture" the keyboard when switching back to it unless you do command + tab or select the icon again in the dock.
  • Crashes when trying to connect to a Windows Server 2000 machine. (works fine with version 2.0.0)

General:

From MS download page:
"Note Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac (version 2.1.1) is not intended for use with Mac OS X v10.7 (Lion) or later."

It worked fine for me after I called Tech Support for Apple and they had me speak to an upper level Tech. He basically went into the Machintoch HD hidden library and deleted some files. I've got an early 2010 MacBook Pro 13" Intel Core i5.

It was worth it to me to upgrade and now I'm considering Mountain Lion. I'll research this first, though, as I depend on MS Remote Access to work.

This seems to work OK for me, and I mean OK. It seems to be a little sluggish and copying to/from the RDC Connection seems to be a little slow and buggy.

Actually, after further testing, it seems that it actually does not work properly. If you have it open on another space, it doesn't seem to properly "capture" the keyboard when switching back to it unless you do command + tab, or select the icon again in the dock.

I have the same problem with Windows 2000 servers. It crashes as soon as it tries to connect to the Win 2K server.

Reports from users and sysadmins that RDC 2.1.1 is broken. I was unable to connect from a Lion 10.7.1 workstation to a Windows XP box. Worked fine with Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Let's see who points the finger at who… :)

It was working fine for me until yesterday morning. Started up my computer from sleep mode, activated RDC and my Mac had a Panic Attack. Asked me to turn it off and then back on! No idea what started this. My co-worker's machine is working fine. I don't get it.

I tried an older version (2.0.0) with a Windows 2000 server and it works fine on Lion.

Can someone help? I can log into my work MS network from my home Mac using the RDC, and I can see the network drives, but I have not figured out how to get into my own workstation at work, i.e., to see my own desktop and use my applications. Anyone know how?

The problem connecting to Windows 2000 is because Microsoft removed 8 bit (256) colour support from version 2.1. Windows 2000 RDP connections are 8 bit only.

You may also want to try free Ammyy Admin
http://www.ammyy.com

It doesn't require installation or specific config. It works behind gateways NAT without port mapping as well as within one LAN.

Good alternative though!
