Time Machine works with your Mac and an external hard drive like Time Capsule. Connect the drive, assign it to Time Machine, and start enjoying some peace of mind. Time Machine automatically backs up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents. But what makes Time Machine different from other backup applications is that it not only keeps a spare copy of every file, it remembers how your system looked on any given day – so you can revisit your Mac as it appeared in the past.

Cannot recover my external hardrive which contained backups from Snow Leopard. Extremely frustrating.. Suggest using Disk Utility to repair the external drive (include all of its partitions) even then this may not work.

'Some problems'??? I don't seem to be able to successfully do a back up to my external drive connected to my Airport router via WiFi. Very slow?

Hmm… works without problem for me…
Have Time machine to do backup to my Time capsule, connected to my router via wifi, and no problem so far.

Lion has networking issues. See their Apple support forums. Whatever you experienced may not really be Time Machine but that doesn't help much if the network is not up to snuff.
