Hi guys, Winclone worked great for me, here is what I did :

My laptop config :

Macbook Aire 11" late 2011.
OS X 10.7.3
Windows 7 partition is NTFS and was originally created with bootcamp, of course.
Windows 7 partition of 20 GB to be expanded to 35 GB
When I created the Windows 7 partition I also created a bootable instance with all the Apple latest software in a USB stick as suggested by bootcamp (I used it when restoring my Winclone image, you will see why).

Ok, first :
I created a Winclone image using Winclone 2.3.3, please read other comments to above or below to find download links.
Before creating the image, I Deselected (did not select) all options under Winclone Preferences, except for the radio button "Use Mountable Disk Image Format (dog)"
Then I created the Winclone image and chose to store it in an external HD. (took more than an hour, so be patient).

Second :
I repartitioned my Internal HD using Disk Utility (OS X) in order to have just one patrician again instead of two (OS X and Windows). The Windows partition was wipped out.
I restarted OS X, just in case. Verified that I had only one partition. Ok.

Third :
I used Disk Utility again. This time I created a new partition (35 GB) and deleted FAT32 as file system. (don't worry, won´t affect)

Fourth :
I started Winclone again and restored my Winclone image to the new partition (took about 1 hr.), Be patient.

Fifth :
I restarted the laptop (and hold option key, of course) so to be able to chose to boot from windows. I did. I received an error message from Windows regarding the size of the volume and other stuff.
Turned off the laptop with the ON/OFF button.
Inserted the USB stick with the bootable instance of Windows (remember?) Ok.
Started laptop and chose to boot from the USB stick. The process starts as if to install windows again, but DO NOT, just go forward the first two or three screens and eventually you will be presented with an option to REPAIR Windows, Choose That One.
Windows will start a repair process, does not take too long, and will restart.
Hold Option key again at restart so you can choose to boot from Windows (not the USB stick, but the normal windows that you installed with Winclone).
You are done, everything is working fine, at least in my case.
Detach the USB key through windows procedures.

I hope this helps. For me Winclone is working On Lion, no doubt. But there are many parameters involved so be carful and I wish you luck.

If you need to use this application, there's a pretty good chance you do not have the newest / latest version(s) of Mac OS… because you probably don't need to make a clone as soon as you get a new computer… Is there a version of this tool for OSX 10.5.8 ?

WINCLONE IS BACK!!! Under new owner Tim Perfitt .

I'm go ahead and purchase this tool to support development of it right away. Just $19.99 and not the $80 or so crap that Paragon crap rapes people with.

Unfortunately and for reasons I can't understand, FAT32 is no longer supported with Winclone. I have a FAT32 bootcamp partition I use to run XP, mostly from VMWare. I use Winclone to back up this partition. I was forced to upgrade Winclone when I moved from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and after doing so then learned that Winclone no longer supports FAT32. So I'm screwed.

I am reading up on converting FAT32 partitions to NTFS, but it's not clear what recourse I have if this fails, whether VMWare Fusion will still be able to read the partition, etc.

This was a most unwelcome turn of events. Any suggestions?

Lion (10.7) Comments

DanniiDanniiAnonymous 17 Jul 2011 18:10

It will work if you use (System/Library/CoreServices/)SystemVersion.plist from Snowy. Just back up the Lion one first, replace with the Snowy one, then once you're done replace with the Lion one :D

[ David]DavidAnonymous 20 Jul 2011 21:22

@Dannii

I just tried this. It's working fine. If you don't have the plist backed up from Snow Leopard you can just open the plist with textedit and authenticate as an admin, then change the version to 10.6. It will save as a .txt, but you can append the .plist extension. Once you're done with Winclone, edit the file again to 10.7 and change the extension to .plist once again.

[ neil]neilAnonymous 21 Jul 2011 21:50

I tried the above but can't seem to get it to work. After I make the changes "About This Mac" correctly shows 10.6 as the OS version and I even copied in a proper build number. Still no dice.

@Gary - thanks for the reply. I'm fairly certain I've got this correct - here's what my SystemVersion.plist looks like:

If you get Card's error ("output is disk0s4 was already unmounted") on restoring your winclone image and it occurs after the bootcamp partition itself is restored, you can run these two commands manual and the restoration should work:

/Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/gptrefresh -f -w -m /win7.winclone/boot.mbr -a 4 -u -i 0x07 /dev/disk1

/Library/NTFSProgs/ntfscp -f /dev/disk1s4 /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/BCD /Boot/BCD

after installing snow leopard on a newly created small partition on my external drive separate from lion,i was able to use the older win clone to restore my xp partition successfully without any errors! the 2.3 version from this site doesn't work well, and although it does make an ok backup with everything unchecked,it doesn't restore at all, gives constant errors about being already unmounted, makes no sense. however our problems are solved!!!
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-professional/features.html
this software from paragon not only makes bootable clones of bootcamp like win clone, but isn't discontinued like win clone,so will receive regular updates, but also is capable of making a bootcamp recovery cd to allow you to boot into windows and repair bootcamp from within windows. also backs up HFS and mac extended GUID partition tables! awesome! had to share with the mac community finally another means of backing up and restoring bootcamp even with LION installed!

There is an error on lion with 2.3 or with the hack when cloning a windows 7 partition.

To resolve go in preference of winclone and check options like that :

Paragon Partition Manager 11 is the way to go! look at some of the apple features it has better than win clone!
Disaster recovery for Apple Boot Camp* Protect dual-boot Macs from the Windows side or in the Linux or WinPE 3.0 recovery environments
Boot Corrector Fix most system boot problems that result from human or program error, or a boot virus activity
NTFS and FAT defragmentation 27 defragmentation strategies, MFT defragmentation and shrinking, low free space defragmentation (less than 1% of the free space required)
Better support for 64-bit platforms
Your computer will automatically be rebooted to native Windows boot-up mode to complete operations which cannot be accomplished under 64-bit Windows
Better support for GUID Partition Table (GPT) Back up and restore not only single GPT volumes but entire disks, including the option of resize during the restore operation
Better support for Apple Boot Camp Not only back up and restore this kind of configuration, but copy single volumes or entire disks with resize
Better support for Linux ExtFS From Ext2FS to the new Ext4FS

  • When running an Apple Boot Camp configuration only possible via WinPE-CD.

My disk names were different. My main disk was "disk0" and my bootcamp partition was "disk0s4".

Another note, I had to go into Disk Utility, click on the Bootcamp partition, and click "unmount" for these to work.

Then ran each of these in Terminal. I broke them up so that I could better understand them.

cd /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/

sudo ./gptrefresh -f -w -m /PATH-TO-YOUR-WINCLONE-FILE/boot.mbr -a 4 -u -i 0x07 /dev/disk0

@ prash i just did this recently ith win clone and also has this type of error. try deleting the bootcamp partition with disk utility, then create a new one making sure to use the EXACT SMAE PARTITION SIZE AS IT WAS AT THE TIME THAT PARTICULAR WINCLONE BACKUP WAS MADE !!! VERY IMPORTANT STEP! that is why that error is coming up. once i recreated my new bootcamp partition to the exact size it was at the time i made the backup,it resorted flawlessly hope tho shleps! now if we could only find a 64 bit windows 7 driver for the ati radeon hd 2600 pro that works. windows 7 is saying the card is an Ati mobility XT. that is a bitch laptop card. this happened in windows xp via bootcamp and the fix was easy, manually point the installer to the correct driver for the ati hd 2600 pro, then it not only was displayed correctly but increased to the true performance of 256 mbs of VRAM. but with lion i was forced to uninstall my bootcamp and install windows 7,although i have also installed xp again very easily even with lion. my friend and i have altered the inf file so that the driver installer installs correctly. it now displays as the ati hd 2600 pro NOT mobility but is still giving us the under clocked performance of the mobility card. this is apple's fault, the leopard disk installs the wrong display driver, thats why i had to fix it when i had windows xp. but at least then,it worked! please help if you know a solution or know a shitload about gpu's and how to get it running as it should. thanks in advance!

do not in any instance delete the bootcamp partition. during the install of windows 7 select the Boot Camp partition and format it. This way it works fine for me.

Hello everyone, sorry my English using google translator
I had the need to use the MBP winclone a friend, with lion and windows bootcamp partition of 7 64. I tried but I could not winclone 2.3 so I tried to install OSX 10.6 on a firewire external HD, but the MBP went kernelpanic I tried on my MBP and all my MacMini with a lion and went all in kernelpanic.
For this I gave up. But now with the 10.7.1 update I tried to boot from external HD with OSX 10.6, I installed winclone 2.2 works only that I no longer have my friend's MBP and I can try if you can clone the partition bootcamp.
You can try it?

simply use disk utility to delete the bootcamp partition, then extend the mac os x partition to the maximum size allowed, click partition. it will then update the recovery location and then finish. recreate a new bootcamp partition with bootcamp assistant, restart your mac holding the option key, select the windows xp,vista or 7 disc to start up from. let it load completely, then either simply choose to format the newly created fat-32 bootcamp partition into ntfs,or reinstall windows entirely if you desire a clean install of windows. then boot back into mac mode, use win clone to restore to the newly created/formatted in either fat 32 or ntfs, whichever your winclone backup's format was,let it finish restoring, even if you get the disk0s4 already unmounted error. or it will say resorted successfully. restart your mac holding option key again, both into windows as normal, when it was backed up with win clone and running correctly. i have done this same procedure at least 100 times. works every time. these other people are haters! that easy! win clone does still work ok in lion. the best part is you can do this process endlessly to go back and forth between working backups made with win clone of ANY windows system perfectly!

Ok folks, give this version a shot. I've corrected the problems with a few Mac commands that had changed output format in Lion. This version should correct the above issues requiring you to run the two commands by hand as well as fix the errors regarding the disk being already unmounted.

Please let me know if you run into any issues and I will try to correct if it's Perl related, otherwise, there's not much I can do without the source. You may see that the status bar doesn't always go to 100%, but I don't think this is an issue with the back-end commands, more so an issue with the GUI rendering in Lion. I'd suggest opening up the logs (~/Library/Logs/Winclone.log) and perhaps running a Terminal session with the following command while you're doing backups/restores will allow you to confirm that the commands did indeed finish successfully:

% tail -f ~/Library/Logs/Winclone.log

As with these types of utilities, I'd suggest having a good backup of all your partitions in case something goes wrong.

I'm also including NTFSProgs in this Disk Image since it appears these utilities weren't exactly easy to come by.

I did some 'experiments.
I installed Windows 7 on my MBP (20 GB partition) and I tried to create image with bootcamp 2.3 and 2.3.1 winclone but does not create anything.
I booted from Firewire external HD with Snow Leopard, and I used winclone 2.2 I created an image of bootcamp then I restarted on osx lion I deleted the bootcamp partition with BootCamp Assistant and after I recreated one of 40 GB, then I closed my assistant I opened disk utility and bootcamp partition formatted in NTFS bootcamp.
Then I opened winclone 2.3.1 and I did the restore has been successful.
I rebooted from windows, but fully functional space as a partition 20 GB

I formatted with NTFS disk utility.
I booted from Firewire external HD with Snow Leopard.
I opened Winclone 2.2 and I did the restore with the image I had (the one created by partition 20 GB).
Result Windows 7 partition 40 GB fully functional.

I don't have the source so I can't change the version information; I called it 2.3.1 to not confuse folks with the version with my edits vs. the version without my edits.

I cloned my 25GB NTFS Win7 system from one Lion MBP (using the "special" setting; I also ran chkdsk on Win7 prior to my clone). Copied that file to another MBP running Lion, used Bootcamp Assistant to create 50GB of space, then exited utility. I then loaded up my version of Winclone and restored the NTFS copy right over the FAT32 partition BC Assistant made and then extended the NTFS partition to take up the rest of the free space. Restore was successful, I then rebooted into Bootcamp, Windows 7 forced a chkdsk, then came right up. 0 issues and Snow Leopard was not used for any tasks. The clone I made from Lion was done using this command:

$ sudo /Applications/Winclone.new.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl -q -create -image_dir=/Users/bubba/Desktop/win7.winclone -image_format=special -ntfstools_dir=/Library/NTFSProgs -ntfs_partition=/dev/disk0s4

The restore was done through the GUI but used this command:
'/Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl' -restore -copy_bcd '/Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/BCD' -disk_device /dev/disk0 -ntfs_partition /dev/disk0s4 -v -update_bootini -q -image_dir='/Users/bubba/Desktop/win7.winclone' -gptrefresh_path='/Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources' -ntfstools_dir=/Library/NTFSProgs » ~/Library/Logs/Winclone.log 2>&1 &

bubbanc, thanks for the quick support. That yielded the same results, but I realized that the Windows partition is now showing up as disk0s4, so something must have been wonky with the partition table. The process I went through to get the partition was a bit involved, as initially the partition created using Boot Camp Assistant was too small (Is there a GiB vs GB size calculation difference between Winclone and BCA?). Had BCA then failed to restore to a single partition (my theory is due to Filevault), so I disabled FV, then restored to single partition, then re-partitioned with BCA. That was the point of the failure last night.

Overnight I re-enabled FV and restarted, and now the Boot Camp partition is listed as s4 instead of s5, and restoration is working from the GUI.

Thanks again for your help.

Mark, go into your preferences and uncheck "compressed". It appears that hdiutil doesn't support NTFS compressed images in Lion. If this fixes your issue, I'll make an update to disable compression for NTFS partitions. The other option is to check "special" instead of DMG format in the prefs.

Let me know if this fixes your issue.

Bubbanc, thanks for your help.
I have had the same error using winclone 2.3.1 like Mark.
Now I have unchecked "compressed" and that have fixes the problem.
But what is the consequence of this disabling to my Bootcamp-Image (Win7)?

Thanks again for your help.

[ Bubba]Bubbabubbanc 06 Sep 2011 00:47

No negative consequences at all. The only issue is that it will be larger than the compressed file, but you can get around this by enabling the "special" compressed format. This will give you the compression but will not give you a mountable DMG. So, if you want a mountable DMG, you'll have to use uncompressed because hdiutil binary in Lion does not support NTFS partitions.

I've made changes to the code so that even if you enable compression, it will disable it if you are using NTFS partitions.

Thanks a lot bubanc

Okies, so far:

I am running 10.7.1 and I have created a clone of my Windows 7 HTFS 40GB BootCamp Partition with Winclone 2.3.2.

Deleted the Bootcamp partition with Bootcamp Assistant.

Repartitioned with Bootcamp assistant for 85GB as I was running out of space. The only option it gave me was FAT32. I couldn't format into NTFS either in bootcamp or Disk Utility.

Winclone is restoring the image as we speak, I wonder if it will work as it is NTFS into FAT32.

Thank you all for working on this, much appreciated.

Have not tried it with Vista or Windows 7 (I hate both with a passion)

Not sure why people are struggling with this app on XP.

I successfully used bubbanc's WinClone 2.3.2 to Image WinXP Home from a laptop drive mounted via USB to a non-compressed DMG, created BootCamp partition and formatted it as NTFS with the WinXP Home boot CD, and restored into the BootCamp partition under OS X 10.6.7 on an iMac (Mid 2011). Booted into Windows and installed BootCamp drivers. Everything was running fine. WinClone Imaged the updated BootCamp partition back to a "special" image for future restores (if needed).

Then I tried upgrading to Lion. The Installer wouldn't let me because it couldn't create the Recovery partition. Using BootCamp Assistant, I removed the Bootcamp partition. Rebooted. Installed Lion 10.7.1 successfully, including the Recovery partition. (There were two software updates after the OS install, including an iMac Firmware Update…hrm, is it at fault?) Recreated the BootCamp partition, formatted it with the XP CD, and then Restored the "special" image.

Broke everything. Blue Screen of Death in XP.

Restored the original DMG. Blue Screen of Death. I tried everything, including doing the ntfsclone and gptrefresh by hand. Blue Screen of Death 0x000000007b.

I even re-imaged the original WinXP partition from the old drive; no luck on restore.

But I think I discovered the problem:
When gptrefresh runs, it changes the partition ID of the BootCamp partition in the MBR to 0x07 (which is the NTFS ID). HOWEVER, it also, for unknown reasons, changes the ID of the Recovery partition (which is slice 3) to ID 00 from ID AB (00 is 'unused', AB is 'Darwin Boot').

After some googling, I found that fdisk can be used to change the ID of partitions in the MBR:
$ fdisk -e /dev/disk0

print <—this will list the current MBR records
setpid 3

Partition id ('0' to disable) [0 - FF]: [0] (? for help) AB <—enter 'AB' and hit return

write <—this might generate an error saying it will need a reboot
exit

Did a restore, rebooted, and WinXP booted just fine!

Now, the final "clone" of XP that made it onto that partition was pretty much done completely by hand, not using WinClone or the winclone.perl script. But I did it just like the script would have, including pushing the MBR and editing the BOOT.INI.

At this point I'm not interested in doing it again…this is a client's machine and I've spent too many hours on it already. But I'm pretty sure that was the problem; I did the restore too many times (not doing the fdisk) unsuccessfully. I'm not certain why gptrefresh insists on modifying a partition that it is NOT supposed to (it is passed '-a 4', saying only act on the BootCamp partition), but WinXP and/or the MBR doesn't like it. IIRC, I think there used to be a "free space" slice between the "Macintosh HD" partition and the BootCamp partition, maybe it is making a dangerous, mistaken assumption.

Also, I noticed that ntfsclone continually complained after scanning the image files that the volume had at least 1 bad sector:
WARNING: The disk has 1 or more bad sectors (hardware faults)
I chkdsk'd the original WinXP drive and ran Disk Utility on the iMac drive and found no problems. I had to edit the winclone.perl script to insert a '-b' flag into the ntfsresize function command line to ignore errors, otherwise the script would dump and not complete the resize or the gptrefresh.

Just to add to the party…

I have a MacBook Pro Early 2011 in which WinClone was working fine for me before I applied 2 or 3 Apple updates. The updates included BootCamp v1.0 (whatever that was), MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update v2.2 & Security Update 2011-006 v1.0. I'm not sure which fudged up WinClone for me. I can't restore nor image my win partition from my MacBook Pro, but if I FireWire/ThunderBolt it and use another Mac with WinClone it images fine to my MBP

When I try WinClone it an error which states in the log "did not complete successfully". So I would advise anyone not to update their machines with any of the above mentioned updates.

Yes, I got it to work with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Windows 7/64-bit. Not sure about Lion yet, but for anyone with Snow Leopard at least it made it possible.

First install Winclone by mounting the .dmg and copying the app itself into /Applications, and if this is an upgrade from an older version, remove the old /Library/NTFSProgs folder in order to copy the new one there; permissions can be tricky, I had to do $sudo rm -R /Library/NTFSProgs, as it otherwise wouldn't let me copy the new folder over the older one that was already there.

Once the app is installed here is an exact list of the steps to follow, it should work.

-1) Make a backup of your old existing Bootcamp partition (the source) using the Winclone version provided by this site (did not try it with older ones) taking great care to deselect all options in the preferences except the one where it specifies to save the backup using 'Mountable Disk Image Format'. I cannot emphasize enough, make sure that 'Compressed' option is NOT selected. Also make sure to look in the Finder [Command - I], to get info about the old Bootcamp partition's size and write that number down somewhere. This older Bootcamp partition you want to backup from (the source) can be on an external drive, rather than only on the startup disk on your Mac.

-2) While having the OS booted from your new drive (the destination), create a fresh partition of the same size as the old one with the Bootcamp Setup Assistant software. Leave it empty and do not install anything else via its wizard once the partition has been created.

-3) Run Winclone again, now restoring the previously saved image to this new drive's fresh and empty Bootcamp partition, and in the end it will come up with the error already mentioned by several people, about the drive being already mounted. Ignore this, just exit Winclone.

-4) Go to Disk Utility and make sure to unmount the Bootcamp partition where the image was unsuccessfully restored onto. (as others have already pointed out, DO NOT FORGET THIS STEP, otherwise the following commands will come up with a 'resource is busy' message)

-5) Taking into account the following scenario where
• Winclone is installed as /Applications/Winclone and NTFSProgs is at /Library/NTFSProgs
• disk0s3 is the name of your new Bootcamp partition, { meaning disk '0' partition '3'}
• /Volumes/path/to/yourbackup.winclone is the path and name of your backup, run the following commands in a terminal window:

$ sudo /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/gptrefresh -f -w -m /Volumes/path/to/yourbackup.winclone/boot.mbr -a 3 -u -i 0x07 /dev/disk0

Where the number '3' in {-a 3 -u -i} actually was the disk's partition number, so change yours to fit if your partition table is different, then followed by:

$ sudo /Library/NTFSProgs/ntfscp -f /dev/disk0s3 /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/BCD /Boot/BCD

Again, make sure to change the path to backup as well as the disk and partition numbers to match those on your system.

The commands should complete successfully. You will then restart the computer while holding the [Option] key down, and 'Windows' should be one of the choices. It will start by complaining and running a full CHKDISK, then restart after which all will be well again, and Windows 7 should boot on your newly created partition.

Sorry, I do not know what to do to re-size the Bootcamp partition, or if these instructions would apply to Lion/10.7

I was going to type this for myself, and figured why not post it here, it could probably help someone else out and save them the hours I just spent in frustration until I figured out what to do.

I have started to run Winclone to backup my BootCamp partition. It was running very slowly, so I decided to cancel the backup. But the cancellation was also running very slowly. So after waiting for a long time, I decided to force quit Winclone.

After a while I started Winclone again to do the backup, now every time I run Winclone to backup, I get the following in the log file. I am running Winclone 2.3, Mac OS X 10.6.8 on an iMac. What can I do to fix the problem? Do I need to clear something or reset something?

Thanks.

The partition that I cloned was FAT32, and the partition I'm resorting to is FAT32, but it's trying to restore it as NTFS. Any ideas?

Hi staygroovy thanks for your efforts! I am trying to make your method work in Lion and it goes great until the last command. The destination seems invalid so I get the following:
ERROR: Couldn't open '/Boot/': No such file or directory.
What am I missing? What is meant by /Boot/BCD ?

Hello, this is my first time using winclone.

I managed to make an image of my windows 7 bootcamp install and am now trying to restore it to a new partition I made using the bootcamp assistant. How long should it take to do a restore. It has been going for around 45 minutes. My bootcamp partition was around 80gb.

Just curious of the average time so I know if something went wrong.

Hey everyone, first time user here. I'm trying to image my bootcamp partition (Win7 x64) from Lion 10.7.2 using the latest Winclone I found here (2.3.2). Shortly after initiating the image creation, it terminates with an error. From the end of the logs:

=====backing up boot sector=====

/bin/dd if="/dev/disk0" of="/Users/test/Desktop/Untitled.winclone/boot.mbr" bs=446 count=1
1+0 records in
1+0 records out

return value of /bin/dd if="/dev/disk0" of="/Users/test/Desktop/Untitled.winclone/boot.mbr" bs=446 count=1 is 0

current size is 0
Could not get size from fdisk! Do you have a Windows partition?

I googled and scanned the posts here as well as on other sites with threads on Winclone but could find nothing. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

basically I'm trying to get a win7 install on a 2nd internal drive on a macbook pro late 2011

heres what I tried last night

I had cloned my win7 bootcamp partition(on the main hard drive) previously and it is stored on an external mac formatted drive

last night I got my 500gb drive ready in an external enclosure using a windows machine
partitioned 100gb ntfs and 400gb exfat
installed the drive and then used win clone to clone the image to the ntfs partition
win clone reported the operation was completed successfully
when I restarted the machine the 2nd windows partition(since my original bootcamp partition was still on my osx boot drive) showed up as a bootable partition
I chose the partition and it started to load windows…but…
the loading screen appeared to be different(more on that later)
it got a ways into a windows boot and then did a lightning fast blue screen which I couldn't see the message on and then restarted into osx

the next time I tried the recovery console came up and gave me the 'safe mode' option but also mentioned a windows Vista installation…huh?

tried again in safe mode…same blue screen and osx restart

so

I then wiped the partitions and recloned my bootcamp partition using winclone thinking maybe something went wrong with the image and reclone
partitioned my 500gb drive using osx disk utility
100gb fat and 400gb exfat
re-imaged the 100gb partition winclone reported the operation successful
tried to boot and same problem, windows starts to load and then lightning fast blue screen with osx restart

I then tried installing refit to see if that would solve anything
same results

it appears as though the 2nd hard drive is not going to work as a windows install

anyone have any ideas?????
thanks

Wow, 2.2.3 worked wonders. I'm running Lion on
a new (fall 2011) Macbook Pro. I expanded a 50g
partition to 100g using Winclone. The only issue was
it showed up initially as Fat32. But a format button in
Winclone converted it to NFTS. Thanks to the folks
who updated Winclone!

@Sean - be sure you are NOT using OSX Disk Utility to make your partitions. Bootcamp only works if you use Bootcamp Assistant to make your partitions.

I tried using bootcamp to make the partition…then stopped the install and imaged from winclone…same result

the partition is recognized as bootable but then blue screen and restart

it seems like it might be am image/restore problem? any ideas

So here's another question:
I'm trying to get Windows on my Macbook Pro. I replaced the optical drive with an SSD, so i can't just install Windows with Bootcamp as usual.
I tried to clone the Bootcamp installation from my iMac and restore it on my Macbook. Everything worked, I can even choose the Bootcamp volume to boot from. But when I try to boot from it, it just shows me a black screen for a few seconds and then reboots again.

I'm not sure whether it's a problem because the image in not from the same computer or whether I did something wrong with the restoring…

any ideas?

staygroovy's guide worked perfectly for me on Snow leopard 10.6.8, with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Also it does work for increasing size of the partition as well, I increased mine form 50gb to 100gb.

If you get an error right when it starts to copy the partition try saving the copy as "BOOTCAMP", this worked for me.

When it gets to the very end of making the copy (took about an hour for me) it may give an error message, if it does follow staygroovy's guide.

Here's a few notes for people like me who have no idea when it comes to using terminal commands:
- If you want to find the root of a file, right click and get info for the file and it will be there under the general information.
- Be careful with folders/files which have spaces in, if it's not working remove spaces from files (e.g. my folder that contained the windows copy was called "saved partition", it wouldn't work in terminal with the spaces so I changed it to "partition" and it was fine).
- When typing the first command in terminal if it was successful a simple table with information in will appear in the terminal window.
- The second command you need to do may say something about the partition being dirty after you press enter but it should have worked anyway, try restarting and holding alt and the windows partition should have appeared.

And there you go, good luck with your resizing everybody, this program works fine, just make sure you put the NTFSProgs where they need to go and follow staygroovy's guide. :)

I had been using Winclone with great success for years. Then after a software update a few months ago, it stopped working with error messages suggesting that it is finding problems in my NTFS bootcamp partition. The errors I get in the Winclone log are pretty well identical to those reported above by acywong on 28 October (log from 27 October).

A few facts. Macbook Pro mid 2009 with 500 GB Seagate hybrid hard drive, running OS X 10.6.8. Boot camp partition is XP Home fully up to date, with NTFS file system. This partition is also used with Parallels Desktop 6. I am able to boot with no problems using either Boot Camp or Parallels, and chkdsk /f finds no errors.

Any suggestions that might help me back up my Boot Camp partition before upgrading my Parallels installation would be most welcome.

Just upgraded Winclone to 2.3.2 and copied in the new NTFSProgs. That did not help.

Any suggestions? I am not afraid to use Terminal, or to run command line programs in Windows.

The problem: Got MacBook Pro mid 2009 500 GB. Use both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 EE 64bit (Bootcamp and Parallels). After the MacOS HD “part” failed a couple of times decided to replace the HD. Purchased 750 GB HD upgrade from iFixIt. Carbon Copy Cloner cloned my MacOS stuff smoothly. However WinClone 2.3 did not work well for me. I succeeded to make the bootcamp image file following hints at this site, but I was not able to restore it on the new HD getting errors hard to identify. Meanless to say that every effort took hours.
The solution: Spending almost 2 days and one night (partially) I gave up and followed Justin’s advice – I purchased Paragon Disk Copy for Mac. [No, it is not an add for Paragon] . The package documentation was not quite clear about cloning Bootcamp hard drives (possibly because they are selling there own version of Bootcamp  ), anyway, at the third effort I succeeded to copy the whole HD (both Mac and Bootcam partitions) in one shot expanding the partitions proportionally. The first two times cloning was fine but I could not get the proportional partition increase.
WinClone is possibly a good software, but considering my hardware/software configuration, the time I spent on searching internet, trying a number of cloning programs and various parameter settings, I think that Disk Copy is the best way to go. I recommend it also because all my software that required activation started to work on the new HD immediately while some of the packages like PGP or InstallShield are really picky in that respect. Anyone who decided to go my way and meet a problem is welcome to ask at moc.liamtoh|6591mia#moc.liamtoh|6591mia.

To stop the error on restoration (unmounting disk problem):
Edit the current version 2.3.2 (in terminal, using eg. vi) e.g.
vi /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl

and modify line 541 to read:
if ($output =~ m/already/i) {
instead of
if ($output =~ m/was already unmounted/i) {

It seems the output of diskutil unmount command has changed - as of 10.6.8 the wording's different if the disk is already unmounted (which is what occurs prior to the BCD being copied). Just looking for the text "already" seems sufficient whereas the current matching text ("was already unmounted") is not found (the new output is (e.g.) "disk0s3 was already not mounted"), so the routine assumes there's an error and then there's no partition resize etc.

If you don't like vi or e.g. nano you can use one command line to make the change: (the following is all one line), also assumes Winclone.app is in your Applications folder.

sudo sed -e "541s/was already unmounted/already/" /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl > /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone2.perl; mv /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone2.perl /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl

I tried your terminal command, but now Winclone is giving a permission denied error.
After the HDD info:

I tried a permissions repair just to check and it did the same thing again.

[ Timerider]TimeriderAnonymous 30 Nov 2011 05:29

Using vi showed that the line had been changed correctly. Something about that command line messed up the file as far as Winclone was concerned.
I tried again this time changing it by hand instead of the sudo code, and now it works.
Thanks for the fix.

Dave HDave HAnonymous 30 Nov 2011 21:35

ah, thanks @Timerider, modify the command to change permissions to allow execute again..

sudo sed -e "541s/was already unmounted/already/" /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl > /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone2.perl; mv /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone2.perl /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl; chmod a+x /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl

Actually, far better (and no execute permissions issue) is to just to the edit "in place" instead of edit, write, rename. Command is now:

sudo sed -i -e "541s/was already unmounted/already/" /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl

This Winclone copying of a boot camp partition seems to fraught with problems. Anyone know of any different solutions to moving a boot camp partition into a new Mac? Prefer to move to an external drive.

BrianBrianbubbanc 03 Dec 2011 01:26

FYI, I've updated a copy to fix the issues mentioned above.

I've also provided additional information on how to use Boot Camp Assistant. In Lion you should only use it to create the Windows partition. Once your machine reboots, do NOT install windows or further partition your disk or try to convert it to NTFS. Just turn your machine off when it reboots and reboot back into OS X, run Winclone and restore.

Let me know if this fixes any of the issues folks have had in the past. I've done several backup/restores recently and used this method flawlessly.

Hi there, I see you guys can really speak computer - I don't, and will give you tons of karma EV if you could PLEASE give me a little help on this.

I am on a mac pro running 10.6.8 os and I just bought a ssd disk that I inserted in my 3rd disk slot. I have the mac os on the first disk and win7 on the second disk/slot and what I want is to just clone my win7 partition onto the ssd so that I can run the thing from there without reinstalling all the programs etc.

I made a disk image of my bootable win7 disk with winclone 2.3 and apparently everything went fine, but then when I try to "restore" it on the new ssd disk I got the mighty "Problems found" message from winclone at the end of the process.
the log says the copy went ok up to 100% so I guess I am on the old mount / unmount issue and I am pretty sure it must be pretty easy to fix. I can feel it! (lol)

Ok, now I don't really know how to enter the console mode or how to type command lines and things like that, so do you guys think I could do this by myself with your instructions? If not, just say no and I will thank you the same, I swear :)

last thing about the log: when it says "Schedule chkdsk for NTFS consistency check at Windows boot time …" I guess that is because this was my second attempt to mount image on the ssd, and this second time I didn't went thru the NTFS reformatting of the ssd from within win7 after having formatted the disk under bootcamp assistant (which does it in FAT obv).

The first time (when I did actually previously reformatted as NTFS under win7) I didn't get this message so I'm pretty sure it refers to that. (And the second time I didn't reformat the disk in NTFS because I wanted to see whether the problem was there or not).
Thank you guys!

@andi64
1. Make sure Winclone is in the Applications folder.
2. Start the terminal app (Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and then type (copy and paste) the following in:

sudo sed -i -e "541s/was already unmounted/already/" /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/winclone.perl

You will be prompted for your macos account password (to do the privileged change above (the sudo bit)).

3. Re-do the restore to your new SSD from your backup image (it's easier than stuffing about typing terminal commands like ntfsresize etc) using the now-modified version of winclone and all should be well..

Hi Dave H,
first of all many many thanks for helping out!

I did what you suggested and re-did restore to my new SSD and Winclone said that everything was ok with the operation. weeeeeeeeee! :)

So I restarted the macpro holding the "alt" key and yes, I saw all the 3 bootable disks, which is a step further but… when I tried to boot from the new SSD I got a screen saying:

(It is in italian so I will translate it in english and some terms might be inaccurate):

Windows boot manager

Booting not successful. The problem could be due to a recent hardware or software modification.
To solve the problem:
1) insert the win installation disk and restart.
2) choose language selection then click "next".
3) clic on "restore the computer".

state: 0xc0000225

infos: booting selection not successfull. A necessary device is not accessible.

That's it. Now, I currently do not have the win7 installation disk as my win7 was installed by a tech guy months ago.

By the way I tried to boot from the working win7 disk and I got a message saying the system needed to restore, it asked me to choose a language and then asked me if I did want to restore the system. I obviously panicked and said no, and the system asked me if I was sure I didn't want to restore windows and exit the procedure.
I went "yes I am sure" and tried the mac boot, everything went fine, but when I tried to boot again from the previously working win7 disk I got the same screen as the SSD. From there I can't type in anything and I have to force shutdown.

I previously saved the important data I had on win so even if it goes dead I can handle it, but… is there anything I could do to get the thing working without calling the tech guy again?

Thank you so so so so so much again! I really appreciate very very much.

Andi

edit: I think the problem now is a "simple" win7 problem, but I am posting this because I can't see why it should affect my old win7 partition too, which was working fine before the "restore" operation…

[ andi64]andi64Anonymous 06 Dec 2011 15:16

ok, I managed to restore at least the original working partition, with a friend's help.
still trying to get around the main issue, that is to say getting the SSD bootable, which is not - still getting the 0xc0000225 error at win boot.
could that be a problem with the driver for the SSD? (maybe win7 thinks to be still installed on a normal drive and can't see itself on a SSD as bootable?).

[ andi64]andi64Anonymous 06 Dec 2011 16:32

OMG IT WORKS!

Wow, was getting desperate about it lol. :)
Many many thanks Dave H!

Got to say tho that something is still weird, 'cause if I try to boot from the SSD win HD icon at startup + alt it goes on with the boot manager telling me I can't boot, while if I try to boot from the old win7 it still goes to the boot manager but it makes me choose between the old and the new disk (normal and SSD), and when I boot it from there it works. Now I'm wondering if this is going to be a permanent asset… I mean, I would really like to free the old disk and use it for backups… instead now I have to use it in order to boot from the SSD. Any ideas about it?

By the way thank you again! May your aces hold in the future! May your karma be gentle with you! May the mac never die lol. :)

I've used WinClone for years and this is the fist time I've encountered a problem.

I have several clones of my BootCamp drive w/ Win 7. I'm getting what I believe to be a GPT signature error when trying to restore the BC drive usubg any of my backed up clones. The drive I'm trying to restore to is formatted w/a GUID partition. It run's thru the restore process all the way up to the end when it fails.

Below is the error message. For some reason I see mention of the "MBR partiton table" in the message and don't know what that's about.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?

Well, ignore my previous post directly above.

Spent all day yesterday fooling w/this trying to restore various clones of my Win7 drive using various blank drives I have. No success.

This morning I took another shot at this and everything restored correctly.

Go figure. Another example of, sometimes when something does't work out, wait until tomorrow and try it again

RE: WinClone stopped - disk full

Guys, I seek your advice as I tried to clone my Win7 partition, made the mistake of moving the "image" onto my own HDD and I ran out of space.

I stopped it when pressing on the error message and waited for more then 1-hour if something might happen, but nothing did and I closed the program and restarted.

After that, when booting to OS, I only get white screen; windows starts without any problems.

Two questions (I'm new to Mac OS but managed Windows quite well over the years);

1) How do I restore my OS that it starts properly again (insert CD or rescue partition)?

2) Is my Win7 partition still intact after transfer image failed or is its starting from both locations now?

Would be very grateful for your help.

Cheers
