At first look, the fifth-gen Mac Pro appears to be a speed-bump of the fourth-gen unit. And, common things being common, the casual observer would be spot-on to say so.
But even subtle refinements in 2010's processor lineup led to some huge gains; as the die size shrank from 45 nm to 32 nm, Intel was once again able to squeeze extra heads onto each CPU. The result was the refined "Gulftown" and "Westmere" series.
Apple responded to a nearly 16-month gap in Mac Pro releases by incorporating the new technology and bumping base specs all the way around. With the six-core Xeon 5600 series in hand, Apple created a third "standard" offering that used it and marketed a "twelve-core" model as a BTO option.
As with most other 2010 models, the graphics options were starting to tilt in AMD's favor rather than NVIDIA's—but it wasn't the first time Apple flip-flopped vendors. Whether this was linked to NVIDIA's legal woes is at best debatable.
Other:
- Server configurations also available. These replaced the Xserve rack server upon its retirement in 2011.
- Sources indicate that this is the current shipping model and that it has been bumped to make hex-core the default processor choice and to include several minor upgrades. Apple may list the bumped models as "Mid-2012" If so, these models aren't qualified for Windows versions prior to 7.
- This model will not be sold in the Eurozone and its candidate states or dependent territories after 1 March, 2013 due to additional mandates on design specs scheduled to be enforced. These mandates are based upon UL Specification #60950.1. Customers in these territories must wait for a refresh after 1 March.
