History:
If ever there was a prime year for the media-center Mac, 2011 made its case known. What at first glance seems a run-of-the-mill speed bump is yet another drastic internal makeover of the cuboid that, like a certain comic legend, usually gets no respect.
Like the notebooks before them, the minis received the "Sandy Bridge" i-Series APUs, with all of their features. Unlike prior minis, Apple allowed users the option of a discrete GPU, which hadn't been seen in any mini from the Intel switch forward to this model's unveiling.
Apple continued to bring its nascent Thunderbolt through the Mac family, seemingly ending with this model; the Mac Pro is thus the odd man out. And with Thunderbolt comes the potential for high-capacity storage or specialized equipment.
However, the real winners this go-around are those with HDTVs, as the 2011 mini has an HDMI port, allowing any TV to double as a monitor.
This is the earliest mini qualified for use with Win 8.
