In a surprise move, Apple issued a silent upgrade to the white plastic MacBook for January 2009, bringing down the NVIDIA chipset from Late 2008 while retaining most Early 2008 features. Consequently, it used DDR2 RAM rather than DDR3, and it did not bear a multitouch trackpad. Apple set the base price at US$999, perhaps in appeasement of the most frugal consumers, many of whom shunned the aluminum model for its being out-of-budget.
